Chesil Youth Pride 2025 - report part one - Weymouth College
Safe places and sowing the seed
The College again became a glorious coulorful location for the third Chesil Youth Pride.
Chesil Youth Pride was created after the council received feedback from young people, saying that they felt unsafe in their communities and that they wanted a ‘safe space’ to be themselves.
There was a brilliant selection of stalls, info, and activities for young people. Great to see so many from our "family" of Dorset LGBT+ Community groups and organisations. Also good to meet again our MP, Lloyd Hatton and chat LGBT+.
Dorset Council along with the Library service, both with stalls, have recently lauched "Safe Space Charter" for LGBT+ young people. Great idea.

Chesil Youth Pride 2025 - report part two - The Parade
A beautiful sunny afternoon welcomed the Chesil Youth Pride Parade along Weymouth's Esplanade.
We, Weymouth Gay Group popped up our flags at The Jubilee Clock, and cheered the Parade passing by.
This has become an annual event in Weymouth, and if you missed it this year, dont in 2026!
Photo left, our group's friend Mel - and her husband. Aka Mayor and Mayoress Dorchester!

We have had a few questions about Chesil Youth Pride, and thought they were worth sharing here ....
Why dont you have photos of the stalls and people there?
We are very aware that many young people (or their parents / carers) may not be out. We respect their situation.
(Plus we popped in early for a preview before most of the public arrived.)
How safe is it for young people?
With Dorset Council, Dorset Police, and several Youth organisations being on the organising team, we know they will have good safeguarding in place for young people at this event.
I'm a retired person. I would feel rather uncomfortable attending a Youth Pride.
Their 2025 CYP theme was "family", and in their advance promotion they made it clear that everyone was welcome at Chesil Youth Pride. They also suggested that adults wishing to join the Parade were welcomed to do so by meeting at The Jubilee Clock and joining in at the end.
Weymouth Gay Group love's to network with our "family" of LGBT+ groups, allies and organisations at these Pride events.
It should be celebrated that the Youth of today have these Prides. Something that the older generation really wish they had in their younger days!
Why is there not a Weymouth Pride for adults?
Yes! It was in 2019. Plus Pub Pride in Weymouth in 2022. For it to happen again, it needs YOU to volunteer to help run it! Dorset has / had SEVEN Pride events in 2025, with only one being aimed for young people. The annual Pub Pride (end of May every year nationally) would be an easy event for adults to join in with and organise locally. Interested? Chat about this at our WGG pub meetups if that interests you.

Family theme announced for youth Pride event
extract from BBC news story (23/06/2025)
A Pride event for young people from the LGBTQ+ community is set to have a "we are family" theme, organisers have said.
Chesil Youth Pride is returning for its third year in Weymouth on Saturday. It will start at 12:00 BST at Weymouth College and feature live music, creative activities and a parade along the Esplanade. Last year more than 200 young people attended with their families and friends. Chesil Youth Pride 2025 - call for helpers / support (posted here 25/10/2024)
From Dorset Council newsletter
Dorset Council are looking for support from the local community to help deliver Chesil Youth Pride 2025.
Now in its third year, Chesil Youth Pride is a youth-led, family event that celebrates Dorset’s LGBTQ+ young people in Weymouth and Portland and beyond.
Dorset Council is looking for support from the local community and from voluntary organisations who would like to proactively help in the planning and running of Chesil Youth Pride 2025. Volunteers will join a working group, made up of Dorset Council employees and partners. We are also looking for support from local businesses who might be interested in sponsoring the event.
Chesil Youth Pride was created after the council received feedback from young people, saying that they felt unsafe in their communities and that they wanted a ‘safe space’ to be themselves. Last year’s event saw over 200 young people and their family, friends, and allies attend a stall event at Weymouth College, with many going on to join a celebrative group parade along Weymouth’s Esplanade. Feedback from young people over the last two years has been unanimously positive with one young person saying the event was “a perfect day” and a “wonderful and inclusive place,” while another said the event allowed them to “have fun and support their friends.”
Cllr Clare Sutton, Dorset Council Cabinet Member for Children's Services, Education and Skills said:
“Chesil Youth Pride is about ensuring all young people in Dorset feel a sense of belonging, safety and inclusion, and have fun at the same time. We are looking for community organisations to join the project group and to help deliver something really special for Dorset’s LGBTQ+ young people. If this sounds like something you would like to be a part of, we’d love to hear from you.”

“Why have a Youth Pride? I don’t think it’s for adults?”

“Why have a Youth Pride? I don’t think it’s for adults?”
We heard someone say.
Saturday 29th June was a lovely summers day, blue skies and plenty of sunshine as we walked upto Weymouth College, the host for the second Chesil Youth Pride. (Click on pic right to enlarge)
A beautiful rainbow crossing greeted us, along with the Rainbow flag flying high outside the college entrance.
Around 30 stalls arranged around the grounds gave visitors plenty to look at, and for young people lots of activities too. While inside Key Speaker Helen Gould, a Diverse, Equitable & Inclusive trainer gave a supportive talk about understanding your feelings to the young audience.
Back outside we were able to catch up with many of our LGBT+ friends running the stalls there. Our Dorset LGBT+ Family!
These included Mel with Pop n Olly, Charity with Space Youth Project, Anabelle & Debs with This is Me, Brian & Rich with NHS Sexual Health. So wonderful to see our Jonai back in action at Pride! With his NHS Mental Health stall.
Brill also to meet all the b-side arts team from Portland too!
Also present where stalls from The National Trust, Weymouth Town Council and various Youth focused groups

As we came away and walked down to Weymouth’s Jubilee Clock to see the Pride Parade along Weymouths esplanade, we kept thinking about how lucky we all are to have such a supportive Family - Dorset LGBT+ Family!
While we waited for the Parade on the Esplanade, a guy came and joined us, clearly also waiting for the procession to pass, dressed in rainbow colours. We got chatting – "I’m here to support my daughter who has transgender friends at school – they are in the parade. I am here to support her, and them. I am so happy to do so".
Thats beautiful we said to him!
….. and that is one answer as to why we have Youth Prides and supportive adults are invited too!

Chesil Youth Pride 2023
New for LGBT+ young people this year (2023) has been Chesil Youth Pride. Organised by staff from Dorset Council and Space Youth Project, with Weymouth College being a great hosting site. This took place on 17th June, a week after the Youth Pride in Dorchester. Like Dorset Youth Pride, this new Pride event was very much focused on providing a fun and supportive day out for young people. Several organisations offering support for today’s LGBT+ youth had stalls there.
The highlight of the day was the FIRST EVER Pride parade along the Prom! - Weymouth’s esplanade. This has been a dream of the local LGBT community for many years, so a HUGE thanks to all at Chesil Youth Pride for making this happen!
Unfortunately, as Weymouth Gay Group (WGG) is a very informal group (our guys like it that way) we could not have an info stall at Chesil Youth Pride as we don’t have public liability insurance – an issue that has cropped up at other events we would like to be embraced by and welcomed at within the local Dorset LGBT community. It would have been brill if two or more of our WGG guys carried our bannor in the Pride Parade. Perhaps next year?
