Dorset Council Equality, Diversity and Inclusion Strategy - consultation.
With twitter comments from The Dorset LGBT Network
DC say on twitter:- "... strongly recommend filling out the survey"
posted here 20/11/2020
Below we have shown the tweets between The Dorset LGBT Network and Dorset Council (DC). They make an interesting perhaps alarming read. Of note, is how DC strongly recommends filling out the survey. You can read more about the survey below, along with links to take part.
LGBT Dorset @LGBTDorset
Nov 17
Shocked to learn this evening of the @dorsetcounciluk new Equality/Diversity/Inclusion 'Action Plan' having NO, yes NO LGB dimension for 2021/22. We @LGBTDorset will be requesting the Council to ensure LGB inclusion from 2021!
LGBT Dorset @LGBTDorset
Nov 18
A dedicated LGB inclusion item is crucial to be put in the DC Action Plan. We are concerned that some do not realise that sexual orientation (LGB) and gender identity (T & Non-Binary) are Different Protected Characteristics: both MUST be covered equally!
Dorset Council UK @DorsetCouncilUK

Replying to @LGBTDorset
We are consulting on our draft Equality, Diversity and Inclusion Strategy right now and strongly recommend filling out the survey at http://orlo.uk/FGPBx before 25/11 to ensure your views are considered before we finalise our plans. Thank you.
LGBT Dorset @LGBTDorset

Thank you @DorsetCouncilUK Pleased of course to have input to the Strategy, but very surprised no dedicated LGB item left out of Action Plan -- please add before survey closes (have on email recommended @clive_ask + sexual orientation monitoring as at NHS).

Equality, Diversity and Inclusion Strategy - Consultation
What are (we) asking for (your) views about?
Dorset Council is currently developing an equality, diversity and inclusion strategy and action plan and would like your views on the draft documents.
Background
As a public body, we have both a legal and moral duty to promote equality, diversity and inclusion amongst residents, service users and our own employees. This draft strategy proposes how the council will deliver equality, diversity and inclusion over the next four years and our action plan details of what work we will undertake in the next year to help deliver this strategy.
We are keen to know your thoughts on the strategy and action plan. Please complete the survey below:

Copy from twitter University Hospitals Dorset @UHD_NHS Nov 19 Tomorrow is #TransgenderDayofRemembrance and our #LGBT Network will be marking the day with a ceremony at the RBH flagpole. It will be streamed live on our Facebook page at 11am, so please do join us if you can, and head here for Chloe's moving story: https://uhd.nhs.uk/about-us/equal Our LGBTQ+ network is here to support staff across @UHD_NHS The University Hospitals Dorset, (including Royal Bournemouth Hospital, Poole Hospital, and Christchurch Hospital) marked TDoR with a flag raising ceremony and a two minutes silence which was shown on facebook. The event was run by the Hospitals LGBTQ+ Network. |
This November, University Hospitals Dorset are marking Trangender Day of Remembrance, which honours those whose lives were lost in acts of anti-transgender violence.
As part of this, we will be sharing staff and patient stories to raise awareness of the diversity in our NHS family. Chloe, a hospital patient, has told her story. We (WGG) suggest that it is well worth a read, as her life story is a real eye opener to those who are unaware of the issues Transgender people often face. It is not known if TDoR ceremonies took place in other parts of Dorset. Perhaps Dorchester County Hospital and Dorset Council might like to consider following the lead of the organisations above for next year? In the past TDoR events have taken place in the Dorchester & Weymouth area, one notable one being a special radio show on AIR Community Radio in Weymouth hosted by Charity (transgender), along with Stuart (Weymouth Gay Group) and Helen (Space Youth Project).
If you are experiencing Transphobia or Homophobia please report it! You can get help from The Dorset LGBT Equality Network http://lgbtdorsetequality.network/ and other organisations. Check out our helplines page here - https://weymouthgaygroup.weebly.com/helplinessupport-groups.html

Non-binary writer releases debut memoir of their Dorset upbringing
Extract from Dorset Echo 20/10/2020.
You can read the full artical here - www.dorsetecho.co.uk/news/18806177.non-binary-writer-releases-debut-memoir-dorset-upbringing/
A DEBUT memoir from a former Dorchester student explores the homophobia and transphobia they endured during their youth, before going on to become a well-known figure in the LGBTQ+ community.
Jamie Windust is an award-winning non-binary writer, public speaker and model from London. They have written for The Independent, Gay Times, British GQ, Cosmopolitan and INTO More, and were named as one of London’s most influential people, in the story telling category, by the Evening Standard. In Their Shoes is their first book and is set for release tomorrow.
The book has received praise from Stylist Magazine, Gay Times and Audible UK, in which they're also releasing their debut audio book, narrated by Jamie.
Jamie said: "The book takes a humorous yet personal look at the ways in which I have navigated my sexuality and gender identity over my time living in Dorset, and how it has evolved personally for myself after leaving and living and working in London. It's really a book for everyone to learn how to live unapologetically. I wanted to write it to be able to continue my passion of sharing stories, and being a storyteller, but also to allow other people in small towns up and down the country to see that their identity is not something that they should feel ashamed of in anyway.

Police are appealing for anyone with information to come forward following a reported hate crime incident in Bridport.
At 11.40pm on Saturday, September 5 Dorset Police received a report of a fight at the Neon Bar & Grill on East Street.

Police Constable Dan White, of Bridport police, said: “While I appreciate this incident took place over a week ago, I understand there were a number of people outside the bar who may have witnessed what happened.
“I would urge anyone who has not already spoken to police to please get in touch with information that may assist my investigation.”

New Forum for LGBTI+ Equality in Dorset (posted here 21/08/2020)
Izzy Pochin, LGBTI+ and Disabled Members Officer writes:-
I am looking to establish interest in creating a new pan-Dorset Forum for LGBTI+ equality. The Forums are intended for employers, community and voluntary sector organisations (CVSOs), charities, those who self-identify, local government and NHS bodies, trade unions and so forth, to come together as equal members to share experiences and action plan on issues affecting the community.
Too often, we face barriers in working across different organisations. Being run by and for the membership ensures we remove all of those barriers and create autonomy and true freedom to generate positive progress towards greater equality.
The Forums will not be affiliated, owned or managed by any one particular group and membership will be free, utilising meeting spaces (when we are able to move back from a virtual platform into a face to face environment, if that is what the Forum wants) available to us through the organisations that we represent to minimise overheads and maintain our focus on equality, rather than anyone's ability to pay into the Forum.
The Forum will be not-for-profit and non-income generating.
Working together as members of, employers of, or representatives of the community, the aim is that any experiences and issues brought to the Forum can be reflected in an action plan that we jointly develop and take back into our respective organisations and communities.
To ensure parity of representation, it is intended that trade unions will make up no more than 20% of the total membership.
Terms of Reference, days/times of meetings and so on will be determined by the Forum at our first meeting.
Alongside this Forum for LGBTI+ equality, another Forum for disability equality is also being developed. It is hoped that Forums for each of the equality strands will in time be set up and if this is something you feel you could assist with through your involvement in any of those communities, please do let me know.
It is intended that the turnaround from this email going out to our first informal virtual meeting will be quite quick. As such, I would be grateful if you could reply by 31st August with whether you would be interested in joining the Forum and in what capacity (self-identifying, representative, employer, trade union, CVSO etc). I will then be looking to set up a virtual meeting for no later than mid-September.
Note: You are receiving this email as we've had contact through Dorset Council, the Trade Union movement or in a personal capacity. Contact is being initiated through GMB to ensure adherence to GDPR, but is not indicative of any future involvement or basis.
Please share with your own contacts and networks in the LGBTI+ community.

In April this year, Intercom Trust launched a regional survey to explore the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on the LGBT+ community. After receiving over 400 responses from across the South West, we have produced a report using the findings of the survey, existing research on LGBT+ health inequalities, and our own service user data.
LGBT+ South West Voices: The Impact of the COVID-19 Pandemic on our Communities details the profound effects the pandemic has had on the lives of LGBT+ people in areas such as mental health, isolation, safety, substance misuse and access to healthcare. The report reveals how COVID-19 has negatively impacted the everyday lives of our community, and speaks to the difficulties LGBT+ people already face in a number of areas.
We believe it is vital that voices from our community are amplified during this time and that there is recognition of the very real struggles that confront LGBT+ people. We hope this report, and the experiences it uncovers, will spark a conversation across the South West and beyond. We hope that the harsh inequalities facing our community will be both acknowledged and challenged as we emerge from lockdown. Our research into the effects of the pandemic is still ongoing, and we continue to work with Manchester LGBT+ Foundation and other partners to gain a clear picture of the national impact of COVID-19 on our communities. |
Can you help us? We need to ensure that this report and the research it contains reaches the widest possible audience. Can you help us by sharing this information with friends, family and colleagues? Or post via your social media platforms? A PDF is available below, and we are sharing this report across our social media channels.

From Dorset Echo see - www.dorsetecho.co.uk/news/18578064.diversity-award-dorset-police-crime-commissioner/
DORSET Police and Crime Commissioner Martyn Underhill has won an award for supporting diversity.
He was awarded the Steve Collier award at the Bourne Free Pride Weekend – Bournemouth’s long-running LGBTQ+ event, which was forced to be held virtually this year.
The award, named after one of the event’s founders who died from cancer in 2010, is given every year in recognition of an individual who has carried out work to promote diversity and inclusion.
Mr Underhill said: “Bourne Free has been an important date in my diary for years, and Steve was a good friend of mine, so it’s a huge honour to have received this award.
“Championing diversity and inclusion has been a major priority of mine during my time as PCC, and it’s hugely rewarding to have this recognised.”

For Pride Month The Samaritans have used the LGBT flag colours on their promotional material and online with the slogan "Be you Be proud". We know The Samaritans support many people in a time of crisis. Some of us have been there.
This weekend (20th June) would have been Chesil Rocks, a local music festival on a Weymouth farm raising funds for the local Samaritains in Weymouth. Like many events, it has not run this year. However they have had some online fund raising events.

Bourne Free 2021 Date and theme
(copy from https://bournefree.co.uk/bourne-free-2021-date-and-theme/ Posted here 20/06/202)
It was with great sadness that we took the difficult decision to cancel this year’s Bourne Free Pride weekend, especially as we had so many exciting things lined up for our new venue at Meyrick Park. We would like to thank the community, our volunteers, partners, sponsors and contractors for the support they gave us.
The last few months have been very strange and on behalf of all the Bourne Free Trustees we would like to send love and thoughts to the families and friends of everyone affected by Covid19, especially those who have lost a loved one due to this horrible virus.
Alongside the heart-breaking stories on the news we have also seen love and kindness, particularly from our emergency services and key worker heroes. They have shown resilience, bravery and kindness whilst supporting everyone in our community in their time of need regardless of nationality, religious beliefs, gender, race or sexuality. From everyone at Bourne Free we would like to take this opportunity to say thank you and well done.
With this in mind we’re proud to announce that the theme for 2021 will be ‘Stronger Together – Celebrating Our Emergency Services & All Key Workers’. Benjamin Horgan, Chair of Bourne Free, said – “All the Bourne Free Trustees have been blown away by the many stories of courage and hope that we’ve seen over the last few months.”
We want our 2021 Bourne Free Weekend to be an opportunity to recognise the people who are making a difference to our community; from NHS workers and carers to bus drivers, supermarket workers, posties and the unpaid volunteers who’ve given their time willingly. Come dressed to impress as your favourite key worker. From scrubs to uniforms, tabards to overalls and everything in-between to celebrate our real life heroes!
“We can’t wait to see everyone at Bourne Free next year and look forward to working with our principal sponsor Ageas Insurance to bring you a weekend that we promise will be worth waiting for.”
The Bourne Free Pride Weekend 2021 will be held on Friday 9th and Saturday 10th July at Meyrick Park, Bournemouth.

X Change Bar in Bournemouth to close in Licence issues ( 20/03/2020)
The X Change Bar in Bournemouth is one of the few gay bars left in The Triangle Bournemouth. Known to many of us who have visited the town there over the years.
Extract from Bournemouth Echo 20/03/2020.
A BAR in Bournemouth has been stripped of its alcohol licence due to concerns it was “disregarding” the safety of its customers. Dorset Police called a review of Xchange in The Triangle after reports of drugs issues and concerns it was falling “far short” of expected standards. But on Tuesday, a BCP Council licensing sub-committee agreed to revoke the bar’s licence saying it had “no confidence” in the bar’s management.

Jekyll & Hyde at Dorchester Arts (posted here 24/02/2020)
This spring, award-winning Arrows & Traps theatre company bring their critically acclaimed adaptation of Jekyll & Hyde to the Dorchester Corn Exchange after a sellout run in London. The show will be performing on 11th March as part of a national tour.
This adaptation sets Robert Louis Stevenson's gothic classic during the presidential race in the wake of Trump's impeachment, in the halls of American power. The story is reimagined as a noir thriller, taking in subjects such as the isolating power of technology, cyber-trolling, LGBTQ rights, the polarisation of contemporary politics, gun control and the rise of social media. With all the above in mind, we thought it might be of interest to you!
The trailer for the show can be found here.
A downloadable press release is here.
Should you be interested in attending the show, tickets can be booked here.
Arrows & Traps Theatre present The Strange Case of Jekyll & Hydebased on the novella by Robert Louis Stevensonwritten and directed by Ross McGregorTouring Nationally: 26th February - 3rd April 2020“The object of power is power.” George Orwell 2020. The President Of The United States has fallen, impeached for corruption and now awaits trial. As the American senate slides into chaos, election fever grips the nation. In the wake of yet another mass shooting, Senator Henry Jekyll, a bold, young, liberal announces his candidacy to run for the Oval Office. His one promise: to end America’s toxic love affair with guns. Emboldened by a landmark level of public support, Jekyll’s victory seems almost inevitable. However, as Voting Day draws ever nearer, Gabrielle Utterson, Jekyll’s campaign manager grows increasingly suspicious of her senator’s running mate – Mister Edward Hyde. As the rumours and accusations multiply, Utterson must race to uncover exactly what power Hyde holds over Jekyll – before he becomes just one heartbeat away from the most powerful man in the free world. Fifteen-time Off West End Award-Nominated Arrows & Traps Theatre bring their critically-acclaimed modern twist to Robert Louis Stevenson’s iconic gothic classic, reimagining it as a gripping political thriller set in the halls of American power.
Note - Christopher Tester Producer @ Arrows & Traps Theatre Company added "In our version Henry Jekyll is a gay politician who struggles to advocate for LGBTQ rights, so I thought that (plus it being a really fun show of course!) might be of some interest to your members"

Everyone over 18 will require a wristband for the Saturday of Bourne Free in Meyrick Park.
