Community Front Room mental health drop-in service in Weymouth (posted here 19/06/2021)
Community Front Rooms (CFRs) are open to anyone over 18 who needs face-to-face support. They are staffed by mental health professionals and peer specialists (people with personal experience of mental health issues), and are there for you if you are struggling to cope and feel you are approaching a crisis point.CFRs are welcoming, informal, safe spaces where you can discuss your problems. Staff will not offer medication or structured therapy, but rather self-management advice and support that helps you find the solutions to aid your recovery. There is no referral or appointment needed, just turn up and ring the doorbell. The new CFR is located at 56 St Mary’s Street in Weymouth and is open between 3.15-10.45pm, Thursday to Sunday. It will be managed by BCHA’s Senior Practitioner Wendy Thompson and staffed by experienced mental health professionals and peer support workers. Wendy and her team are looking forward to making a difference to the lives of others. |
There are more Community Front Rooms in other Dorset towns. For more info about all of them including the Weymouth one see - https://www.dorsethealthcare.nhs.uk/access-mental-health/community-front-rooms

Neurodiversity & LGBT+ New Dorset NHS website (Posted on WGG News page 23/03/2024)
Dorset NHS have recently (March 2024) produced a new website supporting neurodivergent people.
Called NHS Dorset Neurodiversity Hub.
So what is neurodiversity? Someone who is neurodivergent behaves, thinks and learns differently to those who are neurotypical. Neurodivergent people may have one of the following neurodevelopmental conditions: Autism. ADHD (Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder). A “neurodivergent” person refers to a person on the autism spectrum or, more generally, to someone whose brain processes information in a way that is not typical of most individuals.

A “neurodivergent” person refers to a person on the autism spectrum or, more generally, to someone whose brain processes information in a way that is not typical of most individuals.
We were very pleased to see a LGBT+ page! They say:-
"Research indicates that neurodivergent people are more likely to identify as LGBTQ+ than their neurotypical peers. A recent paper by the University of Cambridge found that autistic people are eight times more likely to identify as LGBTQ+ and The Brain Charity reports that in the wider neurodivergent community, significantly more people are likely to identify as LGBTQ+."

Kit who is autistic and identifies as panromantic and demisexual, explains: “It’s important that we bring attention and care to people who are neurodivergent so they understand that they deserve to be loved, regardless of their traits and characteristics.”
Dating culture can be hard to navigate for neurodivergent people, with social rules and constructs that make them cautious. The website has a great video explaining more:- Ambitious About Autism video: Finding safe spaces for autistic LGBTQ+ people. You can see the video and the NHS Dorset Neurodiversity Hub website here - https://nhsdorset.nhs.uk/neurodiversity/living/lgbtq/

Deaf LGBTIQA+ deaflgbtiqa.org.uk/
If you’re thinking, ‘Why is this website necessary/important/relevant?’, then here’s your answer. For years the LGBTIQA+ community have endured oppression and harassment, and there has been a lot of changes over the last few years (such as same sex marriage being legalised in various countries). However, there is a minority within that minority, which is the deaf LGBTIQA+ people – there is not a lot of information being provided for the Deaf LGBTIQA+ community, mainly due to accessibility issues. We, within the Facebook group, decided the time was ripe for a change, and this website came to fruition – we wanted to be able to educate the Deaf community and also provide guidance for those who may be struggling with their identity (sexual, gender and Deaf) in an effective way on an accessible platform.

Traveller Pride - confidential Phoneline https://www.lgbttravellerpride.com/helpline
Our Phoneline is available and taking calls on Mondays (excluding bank holidays) from 5:00pm-8:00pm.
If we are busy we will endeavour to get back to you once the call we are on is over. This is a confidential service where LGBT+ Travellers can get in touch with a trained member of the Traveller Pride team who is also a mental health professional.
Your call can be to get specific advice or information or you can use the space simply to share with an LGBT+ Traveller about how you are right now.
We can offer a listening ear and can also help out with some practical elements. You can call:
- To share your story
- To get recommendations on services near you
- To get help with education issues (applications, appeals etc.)
- To report a hate crime
- To get advice
There isn’t a “right way” to use the helpline, this is a space for you. You can ask for advice on coming out or on hormones, or talk to us about a funny story that you want to tell, or get recommendations for a fried breakfast in London.
The service is for individuals aged 16 and up living in the UK. More info see - https://www.lgbttravellerpride.com/helpline
Online service to tackle suicide in the LGBTQ+ community. https://www.lgbthero.org.uk/
LGBT HERO has launched a new online service aimed at reducing the high numbers of LGBTQ+ people affected by mental health issues and dying by suicide. The new service provides a platform where LGBTQ+ people can seek information and support while coming together to create personal and social change. OutLife also provides a service for LGBTQ+ people to talk, share and support one another in a trusted, non-judgemental environment.
Ian Howley, Chief Executive of LGBT HERO, explains why the service is so needed: “I know what the challenges are as an LGBTQ+ person. I went through my own battles with my sexuality and identity and nearly lost my life three times. It wasn’t until I hit my mid 20s that I realised this is common for lots of LGBTQ+ people."

"Rainbow call companions" run by Re-engage https://www.reengage.org.uk/
Re-engage provides vital, life-enhancing social connections for older people at a time in their lives when their social circles are diminishing. They provide a great phone contact service for older LGBT people called "Rainbow call companions".
On their website they say:- " As you get older it’s not unusual to spend more time on your own, particularly if you’ve lost loved ones or your health isn’t what it used to be. Following the success of our call companions service, we launched rainbow call companions: a free telephone befriending service for LGBT+ people who are lonely, isolated or in need of companionship and feel they would benefit from a friendly phone call every week or two. This is a service specifically for lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender plus (LGBT+) people aged 75+ who would like to speak to someone who’s also LGBT+. Calls last for half an hour or so and you can chat about anything that interests you. What's great is that the same volunteer phones you every time, so you can get to know each other and share stories and laughter – for as long as you both want."
You can read a case study here:- https://www.reengage.org.uk/latest-news/derek-a-case-study/
Rainbow call companions has been awarded the NHS National Advisor for LGBT Health award (2022), which recognises outstanding work by individuals and groups across the NHS and VCSE sector to improve the experience of LGBT+ patients and the LGBT+ workforce and shine a light on examples of best practice.
“This work takes courage and persistence and I am really grateful for your efforts which, I have no doubt, will have benefited LGBT individuals greatly.” Dr Michael Brady FRCP (he/him), National Advisor for LGBT Health, NHS England
