Seasonal Support (Posted here 07/12/2022)
Not everyone will be enjoying the festive fun, and if that is you or a friend, then just a reminder about the help and support that is available locally.
Loss of a loved one, relationship break up, cost of living, mental health illness, discrimination or just loneliness can all make this time of year extra difficult for many. The dark cold winter nights may not help either.
We, Weymouth Gay Group list a number of mainly local helplines and support groups on our website page here:- https://weymouthgaygroup.weebly.com/helplinessupport-groups.html

Many of you may well remember brave young Dean Eastmond who lived in Weymouth, and his tragic fight with cancer. There was a lot of both local and national media coverage about his struggle, and his campaigning for our LGBT community.

Rainbow Flags Fly for Dean at The Weymouth & Portland Sailing Academy

Adam, who’s 28 and from Milton Keynes, tells PinkNews Elon Musk needs to invest care in Twitter by protecting the inactive accounts of late loved ones. As well as looking at inactive accounts, Packer wants the billionaire, who is so fond of labelling accounts, to add a memorialising feature for lost loved ones. After being diagnosed in 2016, Dean wrote candidly about his cancer treatment and LGBTQ+ discrimination within healthcare in his magazine HISKIND – a queer culture magazine he founded to benefit the queer community. Although Adam doesn’t check Dean’s Twitter daily, when he does, he says it acts as a “source of comfort”, brings him “warmth” and sparks a lot of memories. “If I happen to be thinking of Dean or if there’s a memory or something that springs to mind, it’s a source of comfort.” But he admits revisiting their past can sometimes prompt “a sadness and darkness” too. |
In a tweet on twitter Adam said "Thanks to @ChanBillson & @PinkNews for letting me vocalise why @elonmusk needs to think about the emotional value of Twitter. Deleting inactive accounts has significant implications on people grieving loved ones & our queer digital memories @DyingMatters"

Trans Weymouth youth worker airs concerns over NHS gender ID review
(posted here 11/11/2022)
Extract from Dorset Live 10/11/2022

Dorset’s children will be put at risk if the NHS’ proposed shake-up of gender identity healthcare is put into place, a woman who works with trans children in Weymouth has said. Following the news that London’s Tavistock Centre, the UK’s main gender identity clinic, will shut down next year, the NHS was tasked with re-evaluating the way children who come out as trans are treated by the system.
The independent review of gender identity services for children and young people, led by Dr Hilary Cass, is nearing its completion. A consultation has now been launched with the NHS outlining some proposed changes to the way children questioning their gender identity are received by the health service.
This consultation, which can be found here, runs until December 4 and includes some significant overhauls to the current system. Charity Gardiner, a youth worker from Weymouth, said she has some significant concerns about the proposals.
Charity, who came out as trans herself in 2005, said the new system would be a sad callback to what she experienced in her younger years.
“They’re taking away the rights of other professionals,” she said. “What the NHS is suggesting is that the first meeting will be held between GIDS and the GP which refers. Previously, it was between GIDS and whoever referred - which could have been a youth worker.
“My worry is what happens - and it does happen - when a child goes to a GP and the GP is misinformed, gender critical, doesn’t think they’re ‘trans enough’? They won't get a referral, and they won’t be able to change it. That’s not the way it should be.”

Gay Hate Crimes up 27% in Dorset (posted here 27/10/2022)
Extract from Dorset Echo 27/10/2022
You can read the full report here:- /www.dorsetecho.co.uk/news/23080568.stonewall-charity-call-dorset-police-action-hate-crimes/
Stonewall charity call for Dorset police action on hate crimes
Just one in seven sexual orientation hate crimes led to a charge or summons in Dorset last year, figures suggest.
LGBT charity Stonewall said police must do more to investigate potential crimes and improve the low number of charges relative to offences across the country. Figures obtained through a Freedom of Information request by RADAR show there were 160 sexual orientation hate crimes recorded by Dorset Police last year.
Of those, just 24 (15%) had led to a charge or summons at the timeDorset police action on hate crimes of the request.
At least 15 (9%) were dropped because a suspect could not be identified, and the victim did not support further action, and a further 23 (14%) were closed due to evidential difficulties despite a suspect being identified and the victim supporting action.
Data from the 32 forces across England and Wales that provided information on investigation outcomes shows only 1,648 (9%) of the 17,824 offences recorded in 2021 led to a charge or summons. Forces were asked to provide the number of hate crimes motivated by sexual orientation, and the investigation outcomes, for each of the last five years. While some offences may have still been under investigation at the time of the request, the landscape of low charge rates is reflected across the country.
Robbie de Santos, director of communications and external affairs at Stonewall, said society must do more to "combat anti-LGBTQ+ violence and call out abuse, harassment and anti-LGBTQ+ sentiment wherever we see it". Mr de Santos added: "But we also need a greater commitment from the police to take decisive action to follow up and investigate these offences."
Meanwhile, separate Home Office figures released recently show the number of offences across England and Wales has soared during the coronavirus pandemic – 26,200 were recorded in the year to March, a 41% rise on the year before, when there were 18,600, and a 65% increase on 2019-20. In Dorset, sexual orientation-motivated hate crimes rose by 27% from 157 in 2020-21 to 199 in 2021-22.
LGBT charities said the rise in hate crimes in recent years is "deeply worrying", but warned many go unreported and the figures do not accurately represent the whole picture. Leni Morris, CEO of anti-abuse charity Galop, said demand for the charity's support services has continued to rise in the last six months. "Sadly, wherever our community is more visible, this tends to result in higher levels of abuse and violence," Ms Morris added.

Dorchester Literary Festival - Norman Scott and Jackie Malton (posted here 16/10/2022)
The Dorchester Literary Festival has two events in October which will interest our community:-
Dorchester Literary Festival Norman Scott - An Accidental Icon Thursday 20th
Norman Scott is best known for his involvement in one of the greatest political scandals of the 20th Century. In October 1975, following an affair with politician Jeremy Thorpe, an assassin tried to murder Scott on Exmoor but the gun jammed and he only succeeded in shooting Scott’s beloved Great Dane, Rinka. Scott soon found himself at the centre of a major scandal and criminal trial. But this was never his intention... An Accidental Icon will reveal Scott’s courage in taking on the establishment, who attempted to cover up his relationship with Thorpe and silence him. It will also reveal his dysfunctional and abusive upbringing, how he found solace in friendship with animals and some of the jaw-droppingcharacters and moments that he has encountered along the way of a quite remarkable life
12pm Dorford Centre, Bridport Road Dorchester Info & tickets:- https://www.dorchesterliteraryfestival.com/events/229/norman+scott+an+accidental+icon
Dorchester Literary Festival Jackie Malton - The Real Prime Suspect Saturday 22nd
Dorford Centre, Bridport Road Dorchester. In The Real Prime Suspect, Malton describes the struggles she faced as a gay woman in the Metropolitan Police, where sexism and homophobia were rife. Jackie dealt with rapists, wife beaters, murderers, blackmailers and armed robbers but it was tackling the corruption in her own station that proved the most challenging. Ostracised and harassed by fellow officers ........ More Info & tickets:- https://www.dorchesterliteraryfestival.com/events/225/jackie+malton+the+real+prime+suspect

Dorset LGBT Forum comment as Weymouth awarded Purple Flag (posted here 10/10/2022)
Extract from Dorset Echo 10/10/2022
You can read the full story here:- www.dorsetecho.co.uk/news/23034650.weymouth-awarded-purple-flag-status-fifth-year-row/
Weymouth awarded Purple Flag status for fifth year in a row.
Weymouth is once again proudly flying the Purple Flag - in recognition of its well managed and vibrant night-time economy.
It marks the fifth year in a row that the town has been awarded the prestigious recognition.
Like the Blue Flag scheme for beaches, Purple Flag areas are singled out for providing a vibrant and diverse mix of dining, entertainment and culture for visitors and residents to enjoy. But some say there's need for more 'safe spaces' for marginalised communities.
Izzy, from LGBT+ Voices Dorset Forum, said: "It's absolutely fantastic that Weymouth has been accredited and all these schemes have real value in conveying confidence among marginalised communities and is definitely something to be celebrated.
"The concerns I have with schemes like this is that there's always a risk of increasing marginalisation by not looking at the multiple layers that contribute to a night-time economy. I think it's really important that we hear the voices of diverse communities and look at what can be done to provide safe spaces for everyone."
"The increase in CCTV is a real visible reassurance but it's important, also, that business are able to provide staff who are trained in being an ally and creating that safe space. It's really important, as a society, that we show compassion and enable everyone to take part in enjoying the night-time economy."

Gay West visit Weymouth (posted here 26/09/2022)
A sunny Sunday greeted a small group of Gay West members on their annual trip to Weymouth recently. Meeting up at the town's seafront clock, the group were treated to a rainbow tour of the town. They were shown more than a dozen shops around town which had rainbow windows, and rainbow gifts for sale. These included the Post office, Charity shops, and of great interest Baan57 in St Alban street. Baan57 which is run by Weymouth Gay Group friends & partners Barry & Danny has a range of Asian and other gifts, including of course, a few rainbow ones too! Unfortunately the Closet Bar was closed, (pic on left) so a few Real Ales in Wetherspoons ended a lovely afternoon stroll and great company! Queen Elizabeth ll wake with Weymouth Gay Group (posted here 17/09/2022 updated 19/09/2022)
Weymouth Gay Group held a wake at their regular Monday (19th Sept) pub meet up in remembrance of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth ll. It was an opportunity to exchange our Royal stories, memories and encounters. One of our members served on The Royal Yacht! Perhaps he has stories to share? While a friend of the group has posted on twitter a really nice anecdote – Geoffrey Walker OBE MA RGN said:- “Many years ago, I saw this picture (on right) of the Queen in a shop and bought it for my mother. When she and my father died, I brought it home and put it away. I have now unwrapped it again and placed on display as I thought it fitting at this time. I had forgotten how nice it was.” Twitter link https://twitter.com/gwalkerpoole1 |

New Report - Feeling Safe "Out" in Dorset posted here 05/09/2022)
How safe do you feel when out and about in Dorset? This new report - just released by the LGBT Voices Dorset Forum, is the result of a community consultation that took place ealier this year.
Izzy, the Forums founder said "We are delighted to be publishing recommendations from our coproduction event in April and will be working with our partners to implement these to make Dorset a safer place for LGBT+ people"
You can view the full report here :- https://www.linkedin.com/feed/update/urn:li:ugcPost:6971928202323574784
On the LGBT Voices Dorset Forum Linked In page they said:-
"This report looks at how structural inequality, policy, the design and delivery of services and attitudes towards LGBT+ people is manifesting in perceptions of and experiences of safety for LGBT+ people in their local community of Dorset. In April 2022, the Forum held its first open workshop to understand if Dorset felt like a safe place to be for people identifying as LGBT+, from the perspective of both LGBT+ and non-LGBT+ people. We gained commitment from local statutory organisations to learn from and work with the Forum to take forward outputs and recommendations. From our workshop and accompanying survey, we are now sharing a set of agreed recommendations. We will be working with all our members and, particularly, building strong relationships between our LGBT+ member organisations and statutory partners to implement these."

Who are the LGBT Voices Dorset Forum?
On Linked In they say:-
Started in August 2020, we are an independent, lay-led organisation to promote LGBT+ equality across Dorset, including Bournemouth, Christchurch and Poole. We ensure lived experience is at the heart of local policy, planning and service design, through raising awareness, generating confidence and sharing best practice to create LGBT+ inclusive services. We work in partnership between LGBT+ and non-LGBT+ people, lay-members and organisational members through a flat structure to express, explore, understand and work on issues affecting the LGBT+ community locally.
We create opportunities and utilise trusted community partners to reach and represent voices which may otherwise go unheard. We are increasingly recognised as a single-point of reference for LGBT+ equality across geographical Dorset and valued as a shared space, where no-one is expected to know everything, where people can come together to listen and learn and act collectively to positively transform LGBT+ experiences

They said "Monkeypox virus (MPV) is a rare infection most commonly found in West or Central Africa. There has recently been an increase in cases in the UK, including Dorset.
As you may be aware there is a vaccine to help protect patients at higher risk and will reduce the spread of MPV. This is the smallpox vaccine. Due to the increase in cases of MPV, the vaccine is in very high demand in the UK and in Dorset, we have only been allocated a few at a time."
They went to say:- "We are hoping, that in time, everyone who may be at risk will be offered at least one vaccine. Currently, due to low supplies, sexual health services are having to assess the risk of their patients based on information known to them. This determines if people are at higher or lower risk and the offer of the vaccine will be based on this risk. We understand this is a worrying time and no one wants to catch MPV. However, these risk assessments are based on need and priority must be given to those who have been assessed as being at higher risk."
"Please be patient with our services and staff. We are working within criteria, governed by NHS England, the UK Health Security Agency and the British Association of Sexual Health and HIV. As soon as a vaccine is available to you, you will be notified, and you will be offered a vaccination appointment."

LGBT events in Bridport Bounce back! - plus Jurassic Pride in 2023!
(posted here 29/07/2022 updated with newspaer report 09/08/2022, updated again 01/09/2022)
It is great when a group bounces back after an absence. This is the case with the former Bridport LGBT Group, now rebranded as "This is me" Bridport. Run by Anabelle and Debbs, they also have some great ideas for other events including a proposed Jurassic Pride in 2023!
The 11th August see's the return of their meetups at The Ropemakers Pub in Bridport (36 West St, Bridport DT6 3QP) from 7pm. Changing the name of the group to "This is me" and running it as a sister group to the Weymouth "This is me" group, it is hoped this will attract more LGBT people and allies.
The 'Bridport Girls' - as they are affectionately known, are keen to establish a committee of LGBT people and allies to organise a Jurassic Pride in the Bridport area for June (Pride month) 2023. To achieve this, they will need a number of keen and energetic skilled people, so why not go along on 11th August to find out more. Alternatively, drop by the Weymouth "This is me" group that meets up every Tuesday at The Waterloo Pub Weymouth, to which they also attend.
Plans are already underway to run an information event - "Open Doors" on 20th November at The Bridport Arts center. It is hoped this will have a variety of local LGBT groups with information stalls, and will be a way of promoting the idea of a Jurassic Pride for 2023, and recruiting helpers. (Note- update - this event is now likely to run next Feb as part of LGBT History Month)
For more details with all the above, contact Anabelle - anabellebayne@gmail.com or 07411465007
Or better still, attend the "This is me" social groups in either Bridport or Weymouth. Check out our WGG events Diary listings for meet ups details. See - https://weymouthgaygroup.weebly.com/events-diary-monthly-listings.html

Bournemouth Pride - reports & pics (posted here 08/07/2022 updated 11/07/2022)
Bourne Free 2022
On one of the hottest days of the year, a group of Weymouth Gay Group guys set off by train for the annual Pride event in Bournemouth – Bourne Free. Dorset's biggest LGBT event of the year.
The walking parade much to our delight had many more people in it than we thought it might have. It was HUGE! Notable groups were represented including NHS, Dorset Police & Fire services, Space Youth Project, Dorset Mind, National Trust, and many more. It was all very colourful and the prize, if there was one, should go to Space Youth Project who had a small trolly with a music sound system and encouraged the chanting of “Bourne FREE!”. It was also so nice to see that the Parade was truly inclusive with wheel chair users taking part suitably adorned with rainbow flags.
Meyrick Park hosted the main event with a family themed evening on the Friday. In previous years the venues had been split between the Lower Gardens (free access) and Triangle (ticketed), so it was interesting to see how Bourne Free had evolved.

The huge space in the park ensured that some new welcomed features were added, a Community Stage / tent, an Education centre / tent with talks during the day, and a fun fare (Bumper cars with Rainbow flags!). As well as the main stage, bar (£5 cider/beer) the site had various food outlets and a range of commercial and community stalls. Plus, the wellbeing tent with a sexual health zone run by our NHS friends from Over The Rainbow. Having everything together clearly had some advantages.
It takes a huge effort to put on a big Pride event, so it is somewhat unfair to cast major criticisms, but we do have a few suggestions which we hope are helpful for next year (Save the date – Sat 8th July 2023)
Entrance issues. Huge long queue! There was a lot of confusion which might need better sign posting or even two opposite entrances onto the site (advertised well in advance), one for advance wristbands / VIP, and other for pay on the day.

There was very little shade on site, plus at least one of the free water tanks (great idea) ran out. Seating – especially for us slightly older folk would be appreciated (or suggest on website bring a folding chair).
Also, perhaps is it just a sign of getting older, but who were the stage artists / hosts listed? Don’t know any of them, not that that really matters. The younger generation clearly knew and enjoyed them. Cool!
Love the Education Centre / tent. But where was Dorset’s Diversity Mel & Pop’n’Olly? Was hoping to see them there. Spoke to someone at the Education tent – who said they had not heard of them! Whoops! Mel & Pop’n’Olly were at Dorset Youth Pride just a few weeks back with a brilliant display.
Would love to have seen the wellbeing Tent incorporate Dorset’s NHS Mental Health team and our Jonai NHS CMHT with his service user’s art display there. Or in the Education tent? Not sure why NHS CMHT did not have a stall/display?
Bristol Pride (& Trans Pride London) sadly clashed on the same day. Bristol had Peter Tatchell attending & speaking. He is the kind of high-profile LGBT celebrity that many of us would love to welcome to a Pride event in Dorset, and would fill a community/Education venue!

Another advantage in the past with community LGBT etc stalls in the lower gardens is that our community could reach out, be seen by, and embrace the wider community walking by. One community stall holder this year said it’s like being “shoved into an out of the way park were we are not seen”!
Social media (esp Twitter) in the days before Bourne Free was very poor. Being online is an area that reaches out to many in our community and beyond. We feel this was lacking and needs promoting. Good to have a BF website, a feedback section would be good.
We as Weymouth Gay Group would so love to promote our social pub meet ups at Bourne free. Perhaps walking in parade, or with a stall. However, as we are literally just a group of guys who meet in a pub, we don’t have all the insurance and structure that these events require. Our recent enquiry to BF about this has not yet been answered.
We know Bourne Free tries hard to be inclusive, but several of our Weymouth Gay Group guys said the train fare (£18), plus entrance (£20) to most of what was previously free (lower gardens in past), and drinks meant they could not afford to attend.
Pride means …. different things to people, we enjoy meeting & networking with friends on the many community stalls. Seeing the huge range and ages of people just enjoying and celebrating being who they are at Bourne Free brings tears of happiness to many eyes.
HUGE thanks to all Bourne Free volunteers for making Pride possible.
Join us on the Weymouth Gay Group train next year to Bourne Free ! Sat 8th July 2023!

WEYMOUTH will be home to a new rainbow-coloured bus which celebrates diversity within the community.
First Wessex is celebrating diversity by launching a double decker Pride bus - which will be based at Weymouth's bus depot in Commercial Road. First Bus has launched the new double decker, painted in the bright colours of the pride flag, in a bid to celebrate the LGBTQ+ community across the region.
Carol Sim, First Bus Hampshire, Dorset and Berkshire’s head of operations, said: "We want everyone to feel they are welcome, can be their true selves and can succeed, and that is why we chose."
The pride flag represents positivity, peace, pride and diversity. The bus also shows the phrase 'we’re bursting with Pride, everyone’s welcome on our buses'. Ms Sim added: "We feel this phrase encapsulates our journey to bring to life a culture of understanding and celebrating diversity.
From July onwards, the First Wessex Pride bus will become a permanent fixture in the company’s fleet and will now be travelling along the scenic Jurassic Coaster routes.

Students and staff at Sir John Colfox Academy celebrate Pride movement
(posted here 08/07/2022)
From Dorset Echo 08/07/2022
See - www.dorsetecho.co.uk/news/20264363.students-staff-sir-john-colfox-academy-celebrate-pride-movement/
Students and staff at the Sir John Colfox Academy (Bridport) were in full force to celebrate pride month.
All involved were encouraged to wear a ‘splash of colour’ to support Pride, rainbow flags were flown and students ran a stall to raise money and awareness. Students raised £83 for the Space Youth Project, which supports and empowers young people who are or may be LGBT+.
One Year 9 student, who helped with the celebration, said: “Everyone had fun, but there was an important message about empowering everyone to have positive self-esteem and to strengthen a sense of community. It was great to see so many teachers and students buying Pride flags to support the Space Youth Project.”
Adam Shelley, Headteacher of the Sir John Colfox Academy, said: “Colfox is proud to celebrate Pride. It was brilliant to see everyone coming together to celebrate equality, diversity and we had a lot of fun.”
Pride is about acceptance, equality, celebrating the work of LGBTQ+ people, education in LGBTQ+ history and raising awareness of issues affecting the LGBTQ+ community.

Jurassic Pride & "This is me Bridport" (Posted here 07/07/2022)

Hi everybody as you can see we have changed the groups name the reasoning behind this is very simple, the name is less frightening to some people as being listed as LGBT worries some people. We also have joined forces with This is Me Weymouth so any events they are holding you are more than welcome to come to and like wise they can come to any events we hold. Sadly this weekend we will not have a presence at Bournemouth Pride. But the Weymouth group are trying to arrange transport to the Brighton Pride for a small group more info on that as it becomes available. Next Major announcement we have gone on for the last couple of years of trying to arrange a local pride event well the plunge has been taken and we are going to arrange this in conjunction with the weymouth group you will notice at some point today a invitation to join the Facebook page for Jurassic Pride. As yet we have not decided on what form the event will take but it is going to during Pride month 2023 and will be based here in Bridport other than that we have not made any decisions we are also looking for people to help with putting this event on a lot to do and it may not be easy.
More info at the weekly "This is me" Weymouth meet ups, Tuesdays 7pm Waterloo Pub.

Bourne Free 2022: a guide to Bournemouth's Pride event (posted here 07/07/2023)
Extract from Bournemouth Echo www.bournemouthecho.co.uk/news/20260080.bourne-free-2022-guide-bournemouths-pride-event/?ref=rss
The Bournemouth Echo have produced a helpful article as a guide for the day this weekend.
They say:-
Bournemouth’s annual Pride festival is back this weekend. The popular event will see a host of events take place for everyone. Here's everything you need to know about Bourne Free.
What is it?
Bourne Free was set up in 2004 by prominent figures and members of the LGBTQ+ community after a far right group with anti-gay views protested in Bournemouth town centre. Since then, it has become an annual event celebrating and promoting equality and the town’s rich diversity.
When and where is Bourne Free?
Bourne Free’s main event is the walking rainbow Parade - complete with flags, music, and bubbles - on Saturday July 9 from 11am. It will start at The Triangle, Bournemouth’s premier LGBTQ+ destination, through the Lower Gardens, round the Bournemouth Town Hall and then arrives finally to Meyrick Park.
The all-day party continues from midday until 10.30pm at the Pride in the Park festival in Meyrick Park - where it is returning to the site after a 17 year hiatus - with a live entertainment and music lineup.

Shire Hall embraces all at Youth Pride (posted here 27/06/2022)

The Dorset Youth Pride at Dorchester's Shire Hall was a beautiful event embracing not only the LGBT community, but many young people, families and allies as well.
The slogan "Love is Love" with a rainbow of balloons greeted all, and a range of actives offered plenty to do. Several local LGBT groups had stalls, including Space Youth Project (SYP), Dorset NHS (Jonai!), Pop'n'Olly, as well as ourselves - Weymouth Gay Group.
Set in the amazing old court house building, the event was very well attended, and it was nice being next to the cafe and inside (after our stall at Chesil Rocks with wind problems!). It was very helpful having our website on laptop available, as this helped to answer several inquiries during the afternoon.
It is always so nice to meet and catch up with other people from our community at these events. Special Hello to Mel SYP & Pop'n'Olly, Charity SYP, the forever bubbly Jonai (NHS), Annabelle & Debbs Bridport LGBT Group, and Steve "This is Me" Trans & cross dressing social group Weymouth.
Many thanks to all the staff at Shire Hall, especially Tamsin for organising the event and inviting us to have a stall there.
An event not miss in 2023! Below a few pics from the day. Lots more pics via Shire Hall twitter, and hopefully a report in Dorset Echo soon. Great to hear that this event was on local Radio too!

Jonai - Dorch's "one man Rio Carnival", up for award! (posted here 22/06/2022)
Photo:- Jonai De Silva at the recent Weymouth Pub Pride

Dorchesters Jonai, sometimes described as "a one man walking Rio Carnival'' (!) has been nominated for an award, and had Royal recognition!
The NHS mental health support worker, originally from Brazil, has been put forward for the Dorset Echo award by one of his clients. Writing in The Dorset Echo they said:- "Jonai is mine and many others mental health support worker. He works in the community and I was introduced to him about 2 years ago. Before I met him I was struggling with my mental health and didn't go out much and was very lonely and isolated. Two mornings a week he picks me up from home and we go to a cafe for coffee and a chat. When I see Jonai it's like chatting to a friend, he's loud, funny, vibrant, and caring. He goes the extra mile to help people.Once seen he's never forgotten. My daughter often says how much better (mentaly) I am since meeting him. He's amazing. I often say we need lots of Jonai's. He's made a huge difference to mine and many other lives." |
Jonai, who sometimes attends the Weymouth Gay Group pub meet ups, recently organised an Art exhibition with a mental health (and LGBT input) theme. The NHS has recently released a fantastic video highlighting the exhibition and its mental health benefits.
We highly recommend that you take a look here - https://youtu.be/vdMghdwQ4oU
Weymouth Gay Group wish Jonai best of luck with his nomination, and look forward to seeing him at the many local LGBT events.
Update - Jonai was thrilled to receive a letter from The Duke and Duchess of Cambridge supporting his efforts. They had been invited to the art exhibition, but unable to attend due to other commitments.

(Posted here 20/06/2022)
From Dorset Echo: - www.dorsetecho.co.uk/news/20218681.aldi-stores-weymouth-launch-transgender-strategy/
BOTH Aldi stores across Weymouth have launched a series of gender transition guides to support colleagues who are either undergoing transition or already transitioned.
Created with input from colleagues across the business, the guides aim to support transgender colleagues at all stages, alongside providing guidance for their direct leaders and tips for co-workers on how to help their colleagues return to work.
Both Weymouth stores, in Link Park and in Mercery Road, are part of Aldi’s wider ‘Embrace’ Diversity and Inclusion strategy, which focuses on ensuring the supermarket giant is a respectful, supportive and representative place to work.
A spokesman from Aldi UK, said: "We believe colleagues should feel confident to bring their truest selves to work, and hope the launch of these guides will help anyone who has transitioned, is going through a transition or considering it, to feel safe and supported in doing just that."

The annual Chesil Rocks music festival in aid of Samaritans had a few extra Rainbows this year!
Weymouth Gay Group had an information stall, and a "Turing's Treasure Hunt".

This "mini Glastonbury" event was a sell out with 500 people attending, and enjoying a fab day at Langton Herring near Weymouth.
Set in the farm house garden of Tim & Hillary Warren (organisers), the event featured many local musical performers and a regular noteable group from London:- The London Gay Men's Chorus. The marque was jammed when they came on, and it was difficult to get a good view if you were late trying to get in. They were extremely popular, with a brill range of songs.
Our Weymouth Gay Group stall had a special tribute to Alan Turing, who attended Sherborne School in Dorset and is now featured on the back of £50 notes. "Turing's Treasure Hunt" invited punters to guess the location of his hidden £50 note on a map of Dorset.
This worked really well as a way of reflecting on his achievements, life struggles and the progress of society's attitudes towards LGBT people. It helped to spark many conversations around being LGBT, conversion therapy, mental health, suicide and acceptance of LGBT people with those attending.
It was also wonderful how we were so welcomed and accepted by so many at Chesil Rocks. |
Photo- Tim & Hillary (organisers) selecting winner in our Turings Treasure Hunt
|
We would like to thank Tim & Hillary, Chesil Rocks organisers (pic on left selecting the Turing winner), Neil in our group for transport and helping to set up, Anabelle (Trans) from Bridport LGBT Group for being brill at selling Turing tickets & van transport back, Steve from "This is Me" (Cross dressing / Trans group) at Waterloo Pub Weymouth for being so helpful and supportive. Also Alan Turing, who without we would not have modern computing, mobile phones or our stall at Chesil Rocks! Oh, and who won The Alan Turing £50 note? Well, like much of Alan Turing's work .... perhaps that remains a secret but wonderful to hear that it was donated back to the Samaritans. Wow - cool! We are sure Alan Turing would be proud of us. An event NOT to miss next year! Waterloo Pub provides 'safe haven' for cross-dress and transgender community
(Posted here 07/06/2022)
From Dorset Echo, see the full report with photos here - https://www.dorsetecho.co.uk/news/20190171.waterloo-pub-provides-safe-haven-cross-dress-transgender-community/
A PUB in Weymouth is providing a 'safe haven' for the transgender and cross-dressing community.
The Waterloo pub, in Grange Road, held the first Pub Pride event on Friday, May 27, which is run by Ask for Clive - a group bidding to work with 1,000 venues across the country to be more inclusive for marginalised communities.
The event was held in association with the Weymouth Gay Group, which works with the LGBTQ+ communities across the surrounding area including Bridport, Dorchester, Portland and further afield. Steve Mears of The Weymouth Gay Group, said: "Ask for Clive is an event for venues to celebrate their local LGBTQ+ community and welcome Pride Month in their home town. "The Waterloo is a community pub, and is well known for embracing diversity."
Waterloo pub manager Dawn Axe said: "We held the event on Friday from 2pm until midnight. "There was a barbecue, karaoke and general party atmosphere promoting 'Ask for Clive'. "We also held a raffle and raised £310 for MV Freedom, whose volunteers came along to assist in the fun. "We had several small business owners from Weymouth with stalls "Everyone had a great time."
A spokesman from the Weymouth Gay Group said: "The Waterloo pub runs 'This is Me' every Tuesday, which is the idea of Mr Mears. "He wanted to create a safe haven for cross dressers and transgender people to have a drink and a chat in the the newly refurbished Waterloo pub garden."
Weymouth Gay Group will be hosting a stall at Chesil Rocks festival at Langton Herring this month. The stall will have a special tribute to Alan Turing who was educated in Dorset. His wartime efforts helped break the Nazi Enigma Code, but he was later subject to conversion therapy and eventually took his own life at a time when society did not accept homosexuality.
Weymouth Gay Group also meet at The Swan, in St Thomas Street, on Thursdays from 7pm onwards.

Can you find Turing's Treasure?
(posted here 02/06/2022) That will be the question asked to those attending CHESIL ROCKS on 18th JUNE The WEYMOUTH GAY GROUP stall will have a very special tribute to ALAN TURING who was educated in Dorset. A treasure hunt with a really appropriate prize! His war time efforts breaking the Nazi enigma code is well known, less so his subjection to conversion therapy and how he took his own life at a time when society did not accept homosexuality. It is now well documented how LGBT+ people face far more mental health issues due to the sigma, discrimination, and negative media towards them. Chesil Rocks raises a huge amount of funds each year to support Samaritans in Dorset. Samaritans listen to anyone! So please come along to find out more, take part and enjoy a fab day of music! We hear less than 100 tickets left for 18th, so get yours now! See website - https://www.chesilrocks.com/ Twitter https://twitter.com/ChesilRocks |

Weymouth’s first Pub Pride
Glorious sunshine welcomed everyone to The Waterloo Pub and its fabulously decorated garden with rainbow flags.
Nationally Pub Pride is run by "Ask for Clive" an inclusive project promoting acceptance and safety for LGBT+ people in UK pubs, and is a way of welcoming in Pride month – June. This was the first time it had taken place in Weymouth.

A variety of stalls were present including some wonderful craft stalls. One of which, run by The Bridport LGBT Group girls, had a great display of Pyrography (the art of decorating wood with burn marks). They also had a range of rainbow & LGBT goodies including mugs for sale.
Weymouth Gay Group had an information stall with lots of leaflets, and photos showing our pub meet ups, and it was great to network with everyone attending.
The BBQ proved to be very popular, with the local Gulls looking on!

Meanwhile inside the karaoke entertained many, while the drinks were flowing late into the night!
Let’s raise a glass and say …
A huge thank you to Dawn & Joe, Managers plus staff at The Waterloo Pub for hosting Pub Pride, Steve aka Sequined Sherrill (pub regular) for all his/her enthusiasm and organisation. Also to all the LGBT people and Allies who attended, and special thanks to all the pub regulars who joined in all the fun having their faces painted in rainbows! Mike from WGG said :- I thought it was a bloody great evening!! Next time I'll book the day off! |
The only negative aspect to the day was the report (not connected to Pub Pride) in The Dorset Echo (see below) of a hate crime incident on Weymouth's esplanade. This just served to remind everyone why PRIDE is still so important in all its formats.
More pics to follow soon! If you went along, and have pics to share, please do send them in to us at weymouthgaygroup@gmail.com Thanks!

This was a lovely positive event which took place recently (26th April) at Weymouth College. Organised by Jonai Da Silva NHS Meanth Health Support Worker (and WGG memeber!).
Jonai (in photo with feathers!) said "All the art on Display was the work of Mental Health clients in Weymouth and Portland. We in the Weymouth and Portland Community Mental Health Team wish to celebrate the talents and achievements of our clients, rather than focusing only on the challenges which they have faced and overcome." Many of the pictures displayed had a hand written note attached by the artist, hightlighting a personal story behind the picture. It was also a great event to network with not only NHS staff and some clients, but with other LGBT people. Steve from the Weymouth Transgender social group "This is Me" also attended as well as WGG members. We hope this display will run again and give those who missed the day a chance to see it, and to enjoy Jonai in all his fine exuberance! |

University Hospitals Dorset launches LGBT+ inclusion survey (posted here 23/04/2022)
Copy from Bournemouth Daily Echo
see - www.bournemouthecho.co.uk/news/20083493.university-hospitals-dorset-launches-lgbt-inclusion-survey/
A DORSET hospital has launched a survey to help understand how inclusive services are to members of the LGBT+ community.
University Hospitals Dorset is seeking feedback from patients who have had a hospital appointment in the last 12 months via an anonymous inclusion survey. Some 40 NHS trusts are taking part in the two-minute survey, commissioned by NHS England as part of the national NHS Rainbow Badge Scheme. The results of the survey will help trusts gain foundation, bronze, silver or gold accreditation based on their current LGBT+ inclusion work.
Debbie Robinson, diversity and inclusion lead at University Hospitals Dorset, said: “Inclusivity is one of our core values at UHD and we want to ensure we honour this for all of our patients, colleagues and visitors.
“We would like as many of our patients and service users as possible, whether they are part of the LGBT+ community or not, to complete this survey. The feedback will be essential in supporting our work to reduce the barriers to healthcare that are faced by the LGBT+ community.”
To complete the survey visit https://www.smartsurvey.co.uk/s/Q7QBSM/ You do not have to be LGBT+ to complete the survey.
NOTE: - It is not known if DCH - Dorchester County Hospital - is taking part in this survey. We WGG, have asked them via twitter and awaiting a reply. The Dorset LGBT Voices Forum have expressed concerns about this (via twitter)

The amazing Grace Petrie performs in Dorchester Friday 13th May (posted here 13/04/2022)
Her songs "Black Tie" and "Pride" from her album "Queer as Folk" were some of the most requested tracks when we had a local LGBT radio show a few years ago (on Air Radio Weymouths community Radio Station). She packs a powerful punch with both lyrics and voice. Grace Petrie is an English folk singer-songwriter and guitarist. She was hailed in The Guardian as "a powerful new songwriting voice" in 2011. The Observer said "She’s the urgent, pulsing, compassionate talent this world desperately needs." She identifies as a socialist, feminist, and lesbian. Catch her at The Dorchester Corn Exchange on Firday 13th May. An evening not to miss! |

Dorset LGBT Organisations respond to Government double U turn & conversion therapy ban & conference (posted here 04/04/2022, updated 06/04/2022)
Many key National LGBT organisations have withdrawn from the Gov LGBT conference due to take place later this year.
This has followed the Government's announcement that Transgender people will not be included in its conversion therapy ban, one of the most vulnerable groups in our community. There was confusion a few days ago when the Gov said it was not going to support any ban, a few hours later this was changed to say only for LGB people, not Transgender.
Dorset based LGBT groups (and many of our Weymouth Gay Group followers) on twitter have been very vocal about this and expressed their views & support. Some of this is below:-
LGBT+ Voices Dorset Forum @DorsetLGBTVoice
Sorry it has had to come to this and standing in solidarity with Stonewall on a national boycott of the #NotSafeToBeMe conference

Dorset LGBT community challenge Mr Drax our MP on his "belief biological sex is fact - not opinion" (posted here 26/03/2022 updated 28/03/2022, updated again 07/04/2022)
South Dorset MP Mr Drax has a regular column in The Dorset Echo. Recently he wrote this about Transgender people.
Below is an extract from Dorset Echo (18/03/2022)
You can read the full article here - https://www.dorsetecho.co.uk/news/localnews/portland/20001482.mp-belief-biological-sex-fact---not-opinion/
"Attending the launch of a charity in Swanage recently, I was asked by two women where I stood on the issue of men and women being able to decide their gender more easily. Scotland’s imminent and controversial Gender Recognition Bill has re-ignited this debate. It will allow people to change their birth certificates legally, removing the need for medical diagnosis and evidence.
This so-called ‘simplification’ will mean that a fully equipped male can identify as a woman, gaining access to female-only spaces such as single sex wards, prisons and lavatories.
This is an unwelcome development for many women, not least those I met in Swanage, who find it threatening.
As a father and grandfather, I share their concerns. I believe that biological sex is a matter of fact, not an opinion.
Notably, author JK Rowling has made a stand, defending women’s rights to define themselves and protect same-sex spaces."
He went on to conclude:-
"If men and women want to self-identify as the opposite sex that is their right, but that does not mean trampling on the rights of others."
Here are a couple of comments from our Weymouth Gay Group (WGG) twitter on this:-
"The article is full of transphobic ignorance and bigotry. For example it says "a fully equipped male can identify as a woman, gaining access to female-only spaces......". This has been possible for the last half a century with no evidence that it has been a problem."
She added "If Mr Drax wants some education on transgender history, law, science and culture, he can check out my website!" Julie Miller (Transgender)
He ... ".... ventures into backwards Dorset town to instill belief that trans women are a threat to a handful of ignorant cis women" Paul Lawless (Actor/Singer/Theatre Maker/Arts Producer | Trans Ally)
Mandy at Locus Counselling, an LGBT+ and Queer Affirmative Counsellor (MBACP) said on twitter "Outrageous.... factually incorrect.. cis/het men pose the greatest threat to women. Trans women dont."
Mr Drax says about rights .... "...but that does not mean trampling on the rights of others."

Alan from the LGBT+ Network for Change (prevoiusly known as - LGB&T Dorset Equality Network) said:- 'The MP Richard Drax has expressed a very dangerous and ignorant viewpoint. In the way that it has been worded it de-facto implies that [male to female] Trans community members have No right to transition [they were born with male genitalia, so that is all that matters] AND are a potential risk to cisgender women.' The Trans and Non-Binary community is a very diverse one including many different variations. People should think before they speak or give formal opinions; the comments by MP Drax tarnish Dorset as a land of reactionary prejudiced dinosaurs and green light bullying and persecution of male to female community members. This is the sort of view akin to being defensive over the unpleasant and ugly past where slavery is concerned. Where one prejudice comes out of the cupboard, others surely lurk.'
He also said:- 'It would be more appropriate for this Dorset MP to be taking a clearer line with his colleague the Home Secretary on micro environments in some UK police constabularies that breed extreme misogyny of the kind revealed in the Charing Cross police station unit, and the male cisgender rapist and murderer (Wayne Cozens) of a cisgender woman, example.'
Note:- Mr Drax has not been known, as far as we are aware, to attend any of the Dorset Pride events or LGBT groups, during his time as our local MP. We could not find any reference to the Dorset LGBT community on his website.

The Prime Minister Boris Jonhson, recently (23/03/2022) expressed a similar view to his fellow party member Mr Drax. Boris's comments during Prime Ministers Questions, drew this comment from the LGBT Foundation. "The LGBT Foundation condemns the language used by Boris Johnson on trans rights earlier this week during Prime Ministers Questions. We would have liked to have found a twitter account for Mr Drax to ensure he can see the above post and hopefully comment, but our search has not found one.

Chesil Rocks into WGG! (posted here 19/03/2022)
Chesil Rocks is a very popular musical event (think mini Glastonbury!) raising a considerable amount for Dorset Samaritans every year. Of special interest to our community is that The London Gay Mens Chorus are one of the many groups to perform there every year. Recently (March 10th) The Chesil Rocks organisers, Tim & Hilary, joined Weymouth Gay Group (WGG) in The Swan for a very productive exchange of ideas supporting each other. We have some very exciting plans to support both The Samaritans and our community which we will share later this year including a stall there! If you wish to help us on the day please let us know. (We need it! / transport / stall help etc) Tickets are already on sale. TWO away supporters were ejected from a game at Weymouth Football Club as police launched an investigation into reports of racist and homophobic abuse being shouted. During the game two away fans were ejected from the Windowman Stand within the stadium by Dorset Police following reports of a racially aggravated comment and a homophobic comment, allegedly made by two FC Halifax Town fans.
Weymouth FC chairman, Ian White said: "I was immediately made aware of the incident during the game about the away fans being ejected. We do not tolerate that sort of behaviour. Everyone at the club is against racism and homophobic behaviour. We want to stamp out of forms of it in football and life in general. It has to be stopped."
Dorset Police have confirmed an investigation into the alleged abuse at Weymouth on Saturday has been launched.

Dorset Police have confirmed an investigation into the alleged abuse at Weymouth on Saturday has been launched.

LGBT+ Voices Dorset Forum are holding this free online workshop in April, to explore your experiences in a safe and welcoming space. On twitter they said:- "We want to hear from you to understand if Dorset is a safe place for LGBT+ people. Join a free online workshop on 28th April 10.30am-12.30pm to share your thoughts in our safe space". Sign up at https://bit.ly/3KbzGxy Or you can fiil in the survey at https://bit.ly/35Lnpk8 Twitter link - https://twitter.com/DorsetLGBTVoice |
The LGBT+ Voices Dorset Forum says this about their survey:-
"This survey is being run by the LGBT+ Voices Dorset Forum, a group of LGBT+ people, local organisations and allies who are committed to changing our society for the better and who ensure LGBT+ experiences are reflected in local policy, planning and services.
The reason for this survey is to talk about what it feels like being out and about in Dorset for our LGBT+ community.
We want to hear from both LGBT+ and non-LGBT+ people, to understand any differences in experiences or perceptions of our local community.
Please do complete this survey even if you don’t identify as LGBT+, we’d really like to hear your views.
We have commitment from our councils, the police, our health services and other local organisations to take forward learning and work with the Forum to help make Dorset a more safe and welcoming county. If you tick the box in the survey, we will keep you informed of progress and share the report of our findings with you. We will do this within 3 months".

Clock to turn BLUE (posted here 19/02/2022)
Weymouth's famous town clock on the sea front is to turn blue following a nomination by Weymouth Gay Group.
Weymouth's famous town clock on the sea front is to turn blue following a nomination by Weymouth Gay Group.
The ‘Light Up The Jubilee Clock for Charity’ scheme for 2022 is run by Weymouth Town Council and we recently had this email from them:- "Following the campaign, the panel met and have agreed when the clock will be lit for various occasions / charities to support them and raise awareness. So, in light of your recent nomination for the scheme, I am pleased to confirm that the clock will be lit in the colour Blue in awareness of Dorset Mind - throughout Mental Health Week on 9th-15th May 2022. Thank you for your nomination, we look forward to seeing the clock light up in your chosen colour!" Dorset Mind are champions at supporting anyone (including LGBT+ people) with mental health and wellbeing needs, they run two Dorset LGBT support groups, one in Bournemouth, and a Pan Dorset group. The Pan Dorset group before covid used to meet up regularly in Weymouth. |
More info - https://dorsetmind.uk/help-and-support/support-groups/lgbtiq/
Would be brill if Weymouth Town Council could light the town clock up in our Rainbow colours like our WGG logo in the future! Perhaps for Pride, IDAHOT or LGBT History Month.

Mystery supporter pays for WGG group Valentine meal!
(posted here 19/02/2022)
A small group of our guys were pleasantly surprised when it came to paying the bill in Harvey's Restaurant that an anonymous person had already paid £100 towards it!
We would like to thank that person for this very kind act, which took place on Valentines Day!
It's lovely to know, especially during LGBT History Month, that we have this kind of support out there.
Harvey's on Weymouth seafront, is one of a number of local Restaurants that the Weymouth Gay Group (WGG) guys enjoy with their "Meals Out on Mondays". It is an opportunity to meet socially and enjoy good food and company.
You can read more about our "Meals Out on Mondays" below and here - https://weymouthgaygroup.weebly.com/wgg-events.html
You are welcome to join us, but you will probably have to pay your own bill in full!

Bridport LGBT Group ending? (posted here 16/02/2022)
At a recent LGBT social meet up, Annabelle and Debera, who ran the group said it was closing. Always very sad when a group that offers face to face pub meetups ends. Our community needs more groups like this, but equally they need to be supported by YOU & local LGBT+ people who wish to meet up in a public bar.
Anabelle said that they are keeping their online presence. Below is their statement:-
"This is one post i dont like making after running the group for the last few years and with declining members who are wanting to meet for a drink or coffee we have decided to close the group this will be effective immediately though the facebook page will continue just for any info which may come my way plus remember you can post events etc to the page yourselves. If you find the need to meet with others i am sure the group at Yeovil or Weymouth would make you very welcome. Thank you to all those who have visted over the time the group has run and one other thing be PROUD & LOUD. Goodbye from Anabelle & Debra."

Remembering Alan in a recent WGG tweet (posted here 19/02/2022)
We recently tweeted this as part of LGBT History Month:- " #Weymouth #Gay Group:- For #LGBTHM22 highlighting #Sherborne #Dorset School Boy Alan Turing, remembering his past achievements & struggles. Celebrating him on your £50 notes! " His genius helped the Allies win WWII, but he was not treated well at home. He was persecuted for being gay & chemically castrated. He tragically died in 1954 from cyanide poisoning. We remember his life & legacy during this LGBT History Month. twitter link - https://twitter.com/WeymouthGayGrp |

Weymouth in Lockdown - amazing video & song by a WGG member. (posted here 06/01/2022)
Simon, one of our Weymouth Gay Group (WGG) members has produced an amazing video and song reflecting life in Weymouth during Lockdown.
Simon, one of our Weymouth Gay Group (WGG) members has produced an amazing video and song reflecting life in Weymouth during Lockdown.
"A Clown With Out a Face" - from the album The Cost of Living - written and performed by Simon Felton is a song of our time and very professionally produced. With filming by himself and his father Tony, they capture the atmosphere in a similar way to the Specials 1981 hit "Ghost Town". Illustrating loneliness, Simon is seen "Kicking around runaway town", with many of Weymouth's landmarks and places that you will know. Simon runs the indie label Pink Hedgehog and also fronts power-pop combo, Garfields Birthday. More recently he joined harmony-fuelled roots band Wilson and released his own “therapeutic trilogy” of albums. November 2020 saw the release of his latest collection of bittersweet pop, and as ever he remains nervously optimistic. |
In an email to Weymouth Gay Group he said:- "I’m recording some new songs at the moment, for a possible new release, mostly around the themes of mental health and failed relationships. All the fun stuff; it should be a big hit at parties and clubs all over the world, guaranteed to fill the dance floor! Music (writing, recording, performing and listening) it’s definitely therapy for me."
Simon attends some of our Weymouth Gay Group social pub meet ups during the year, when he is not to busy making music!
As Simon said to his fellow WGG friends, "This might put a smile on your face; my lockdown song/video".
So check it out here - https://youtu.be/aQvh_fmXGyw
Oh, and yes we love the nice ending! Thanks Simon!
