2018 UPDATE - after the day. Did you go? Oh it was so wet, so if you went along a mega thank you for supporting Dorchester Love Parade. We had a FAB time and thank all the organisers for changing the venue! Always great to meet up with so many of our friends in the LGBT community at this event. Great to meet David Taylor, Dorchester Mayor and his husband too. Despite the bad weather, the main part of The Corn Exchange was heaving with people by mid afternoon.
Rain does little to stop crowds flocking to Dorchester's Pride

The Corn Exchange was filled with bright colours and loud music for the return of Dorchester’s Pride event.
This year’s Love Parade though South Street on Sunday had to be cancelled due to the wet weather. However, organisers didn’t let the rain dampen their spirits and moved the afternoon of entertainment planned to take place at Maumbury Rings to the town centre.
There was a huge turnout at the Corn Exchange, where visitors were treated to live performances from local bands, drag queens and more. Chris Jago, who helped organise this year’s event, said: “The party always goes on. “We’ve had an amazing turnout here today, we don’t know the exact capacity, but it’s heaving.” He added: “It’s a celebration of diversity and equality that brings together the whole community.”
Mayor of Dorchester Councillor David Taylor also attended the event and said: “This is a special moment for Dorset and Dorchester, we’re celebrating the liberation of the LGBT movement making sure people understand the fact that we are all equal. “As a married gay man and the Mayor of Dorchester I am pleased to say what a fantastic event this is.”

Dorchester Love Parade (Pride) August 26th 2018.
We attend this cute local event every year and enjoy having a stall/display there, and catching up with local friends. The outdoor venue is amazing. Maumbury Rings is a Neolithic henge, it is a large circular earthwork, later a Roman amphitheater. Now Maumbury Rings hosts a variety of outdoor events, a venue of envy for many other prides!
The midday parade thought the county town starts off at town pump, from 12 noon. Stalls and stage entertainment in Maumbury Rings from midday. Cafe Jagos for the party in the evening.
This may still be one of the best kept secret Pride events in UK, until you and your friends attend!
It would be great if more LGBT groups could have a stall/display, and bring all their friends along.

Dorchester Love Parade August 2017
Did you miss it? It was great! Oh dear, don’t worry- always next year!
Well perhaps it is one of Dorset’s best kept lgbt secrets, but that’s hard to believe as it has been running for over 7 (?) years and has been reported in the local media many times.
The day started with the parade from Dorchester Town pump at 12 noon see photo Dorset Echo report http://www.dorsetecho.co.uk/news/15498798.PICTURES__Sun_shines_on_Dorchester_Love_Parade/?ref=mr&lp=4 and ended with the party at Café Jagos. Maumbury Rings is the bit in the middle, enjoyed by many. Maumbury Rings, for those who have never been, is a Neolithic henge / roman venue in the south of Dorchester town. It is a large circular earthwork, 85 metres in diameter, with a single bank. It’s like a natural amphitheatre ideal for outdoor events. An amazing venue perhaps the envy of other pride events!
For me the day started with WGG member Alan arriving with Shaun at my home at 10am to collect not only me but an assortment of boxes and bits which would later form our WGG display. Alan managed to cram them all into his car and it was so good to get a lift up to Dorchester (and back) after all the problems and hassle of last year.
Before long, our display was up and looking good, and best of all the sun shining and loads of people arriving into the Rings following the Parade. One thing we really like about this event is how we catch up with friends we may not have seen for a while, plus guys who are on holiday in the area (who found out about Love Parade via our website) and new people. It was lovely to finally meet up with Harry. Some of you may recall him form the outstanding Stonewall themed play a few years back at Weymouth College. If you like reading blogs, you can check out Harry’s one here - https://benumberone.wixsite.com/no1home
One person missing was the new Mayor (unless he was in drag and we did not recognise him!). Last year it was great to meet the then Mayor, and he had some great positive things to say about the Love parade and local LGBT people.
We hear the evening party at Cafe Jagos was fun, as always.
So, the secret is out! Don’t miss The Dorchester Love Parade Sunday 26th August 2018. Pop it in ya diary now!
Our thanks to:-
Chris at Café Jagos for organising The Love Parade each year, plus all his team.
Weymouth Gay Group guys - Alan, Elliot, Graham, Shaun, Tony.
Susan Ward-Rice at the Council for loan of table & gazebo (and Alan at LGBT Dorset Equality Network) – without this our stall would have been impossible!
Helen of Space Youth Project for being a great stall neighbour, and helping put our gazebo up, and the ice cream!
Do you belong to an lgbt group / organisation? Or wish to reach out to the local lgbt community? Why not have a stall / display at Dorchester love Parade in 2018? Would be great to see all the stalls at Bourne Free, Bournemouth's Pride in July, also at Dorchester Love parade

Report from Dorset Echo 29/08/2016
DORCHESTER’S Love Parade took to the streets in a celebration of gay pride.
Despite the rain, it was smiles and glitter galore as marchers walked through the county town this afternoon. The parade set off from Dorchester Town Pump at 12.30pm, down Weymouth Avenue, and onto Maumbury Rings for a full line up of live music and family entertainment.
Neil Code, a parade steward from Weymouth, said: “This is a big community which is a little bit off the beaten track, so the parade gives people from in and out of the Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual and Transgender community the chance to celebrate together. “Hopefully it has a ripple effect and can help change attitudes through the local community.”
Now in its seventh year, the celebration is fast becoming a landmark event on Dorchester's social calendar.
Organiser Chris Kendrick said: “I started the parade because when I first moved to Dorchester there was no LGBT events at all. “Since we began I think attitudes in the town have really changed, even the police have commented on that.”
Visitors to the historic site were treated to a diverse variety of entertainment from noon to 7pm. Performances included, live comedy, the 'Killer Heels Showgirls', and a Cher tribute. Spectator Marcus Dampier-Smith, 28, from Dorchester, said: “We always come down and support the parade. I think with recent events around the world, like the Orlando shootings, it’s even more important to support events like these and show unity.” Through its growing following, the Love Parade aims to encourage young LGBT people to feel comfortable in their own skin.
Parade participant Jonai Da Silva, 53, from Dorchester, said: “I work in mental health and I see a lot of LGBT people who suffer from it. We need to get the message across that no matter what your colour, religion or gender everyone deserves love and dignity. “We need to help vulnerable LGBT people, today is about giving them a confidence boost.”
Food stalls, a bouncy castle, face-painting, and craft activities were also on offer throughout the day.
Mayor of Dorchester Tim Harriers said: "I think it is brilliant. It is a good event for Dorchester and it’s really important to support the LGBT community. "The Love Parade is a lot of fun but with a sensible message.”

Dorchester Love Parade 2016 A report from Weymouth Gay Group.
I think my best memory of this years event will be the great comment from Dorchesters Mayor, Tim Harries "Dorchester welcomes everyone". Although the weather to start with was not so welcoming, the sun did shine on us all later. I arrived by taxi (no one else had a car) with a paste table and a gazebo plus bags of leaflets and pics of our group events. Keen to get the gazebo up in the drizzling rain, I skipped reading the instruction leaflet. Bad move! After getting all the poles mixed up ... it was Brian & Jonai (and friends) who kindly came to the rescue, thanks. It did need at least 3 if not 4 people to get it up (the gazebo I mean), not sure if the instructions stated that.
Maumbury Rings is an amazing historic earthworks venue, almost a natural amphitheatre and it lens itself well to outdoor events like Love Parade. On one side is the stage and bar, while stalls are around the opposite side. Plenty of space in the middle for people to sit and enjoy the free on stage entertainment that was put on during the afternoon.
The midday parade was very colourful and had a dragon made by the Space Youth Project young people, which looked very good.
After the tragic event in Orlando, many say pride events are even more important to support. It is also great just to be happy mixing with like minded people. I enjoy meeting the friends who I may only see once or twice a year, while also networking with other lgbt groups and related organizations. It was also good to meet "the medic man" for the first time, and nice to see the rainbow flag on his ambulance car. As always our Jonai had a great outfit and looked marvellous! So too did our Jay in drag, I did not know it was him to start with!
I hear the after party that evening at cafe Jagos went well, I had returned (via another taxi) to Weymouth, so missed out on this part of the day.
Sadly I received a negative comment (on a social phone app) a few days before the event. I welcome the comments made in response by some of those attending The Love Parade. Sad also to see more negative remarks at the end of the otherwise excellent report in the Echo. Just shows how important pride events are to help change attitudes, and spread the Love!
Did you miss Love Parade 2016? Just remember what Mayor Tim Harries said - "Dorchester welcomes everyone", so see you at Love Parade in 2017!
Special thanks to Chris at Jagos and all his team for putting on this great event. And a personal thanks to Brian & Jonai and friends for help with gazebo. I would also like to thank The Dorset lgbt network for support too.

Dorchester's Love Parade will make a welcome return on Sunday, with a South American themed procession heading through the town from noon. There will then be music and fun for all ages at Maumbury Rings throughout the afternoon and evening before an after party at Café Jagos.
Acts performing at Maumbury Rings include Nina Garcia, Hustle, Neil Ross, a Cher Tribute and Killer Heels Showgirls.
There will also be activities such as face painting and a bouncy castle and a range of food and craft stalls set up on the day.
One of the organises of the event, Chris Kendrick, said they are really hoping for their biggest year. He said: “We had to move the Love Parade at the last minute last year which I think affected our numbers - even though we were still really really busy. But this year we are hoping for more.” He added: “The Orlando nightclub shooting took us all a couple of steps back and we have that in mind at this year. It is why we have events like this.”
