Now that the Pride season is over in Dorset …..
So, err ….
How many Prides did we have in Dorset this year? Which ones did you go to?
We think it started off back in the spring with six, or was it seven? Early in the new year saw one cancelled, as the venue had not been paid deposit! (Weymouth Craft with Pride) While in May the annual Pub Pride with 200 venues nationally and three advertised in Dorset failed to deliver any locally! Oh dear.
Despite these setbacks news quickly came through about two new Prides, Sherborne and Poole.
With all the regular Dorset Prides happening we produced a Dorset Pride Poster advertising them all. Seems like a very logical and valuable idea to promote them all together. We distributed this around the Dorset LGBT+ Community and it was very well received.
However, it soon became outdated with yet more Dorset Prides! Yippy!
Along came news of Charmouth Pride (did it happen, some confusion?), Bournemouth Community Pride, even a Dorset Cricket Pride!
Brill to see the return of the two Youth Prides (Dorset Youth Pride & Chesil Youth Pride), and the Parade along Weymouth’s esplanade, wow! Over double the size from 2023!
A Jurassic Pride has been proposed for several years (Bridport area), and like all Pride events can only happen if enough volunteers and sponsors come forward.
Portland Prison Pride - Pride on the inside. Whilst it is not an environment that any of us would like to celebrate Pride in, we must remember that it was not that long ago that just being who we are would have found us in such a place. Sadly this is also the case in far to many countries around the world.
Let’s rejoice how Dorset Prides embrace a diversity of styles and opportunities for our community to come together to both celebrate and protest.
So ..is that a record number of 10 or 12 or more to choose from in 2025? However many you can be sure that we Weymouth Gay Group will have a Dorset Prides 2025 poster promoting them all, and all the info will be on our website pages here for you too.

Although slightly outside our area, this is an ideal event for LGBT+ people and friends in North Dorset.

"Pride will take place at Lighthouse arts centre on 8 June and will be preceded by a week-long film festival. A month-long exhibition is also planned to honour gay activist John Chesterman, who was involved in the formation of the Gay Liberation Front in 1970. As well as the concert and DJs, there will be a family-friendly daytime programme with performances and talks" Friday 7th A Live and Unheard event with musicians identifying as LGBTQ+. Dorset's biggest annual LGBT+ event, Bournemouth Pride - BourneFree. Every year we hear of guys who say they wanted to go but missed it. So, SAVE the DATE for 2024 NOW! JULY 6th. This will again be at Shire Hall Dorchester and ran in June 2022 for the first time. Organisers are keen to repeat this Pride event in July 2024. It is a really beautiful event, and you dont need to be "lgbt youth" to attend and enjoy it.

When is Pride not Pride?

One advantage of attending regular pub meetups with fellow LGBT+ friends is chatting with a pint over LGBT+ news, issues, and exchanging views.
With the news that Dorset is set to have SEVEN (or more!) Pride events this year 2024, the topic came up around our Weymouth pub tables as to what really is a Pride event, and why have one?
Can anyone run one? Does it have to be “Gay”? Is a Parade or protest essential? Why have a party when there is still so much hate towards our community still out there?

“Pride – oh I remember that - Granny used to buy that bread!”.
The new Poole Pride hopefully will help answer some of these questions with a Pride Exhibition at The Lighthouse in Poole.
Its part of Poole Prides ‘We Didn’t Know Whether It Was A Revolution or a Party’ Exhibition. John Chesterman and Gay Pride Fri 24 May - Sun 16 June. This exhibition is free for everyone to enjoy and is part of Poole Pride.
Communication breakdown and miss understandings can of course lead to confusion. This is the case with the new Weymouth “Craft with Pride”. Is it a Pride event?
The organisers clearly said to us it IS a Pride event, calling it Weymouth Pride taking place on 15th June adding -"Craft with Pride is an event bringing crafters together with the Pride community", however one craft stall holder (also LGBT) still says differently!
Back on our pub table some of the guys asked why have a Weymouth Craft with Pride? (Will they do Craft Ales? ha ha!) Or, any other variation on the “normal” Pride events?

If you wish to embrace diversity and be inclusive, – why have these Prides aimed at minority groups?
Black Pride is well established in London, while Travellers Pride and Student Pride also take place every year. So why not a Pride with Classic Cars – now that would interest a few of our guys! (Check out Weymouth Craft Pride!)
Young people may well feel more comfortable with the Prides specially aimed for them, Dorset is blessed with TWO Youth Prides, the well-established Dorset Youth Pride at Shire Hall Dorchester, and the newer Chesil Youth Pride at Weymouth College.
If a Pub environment is more to your liking, check out Pub Pride which runs nationally again on May 31st and welcomes in Pride month (June). In 2023 they had over 300 venues taking part nationally with three in Dorset!

It's been a HUGE let down for LGBT+ people wishing to enjoy Pub Pride 2024 in Dorset.
None of the three Dorset venues advertised on their website are taking part.
We phoned the two Weymouth Pubs (on 27/05/2024), Wyke Smugglers and The Old Ship Inn who both said nothing was happening. So why are they listed? The Globe Inn Swanage - sadly their phone number is not connecting, and further research suggests that the pub is closed for a refit having been taken over by a community group.
We, Weymouth Gay Group had contacted all three by post weeks ago, with details about our group and an invitation to help support their Pub Pride. With no response.
Someone said: - Don't ask for Clive, he won't be there!
On a slightly brighter note, Dorchesters Transgender group have said they will run a "Pub Pride" type of event later this year.

The Weymouth Craft with Pride is CANCELLED!

Pub Pride is quite new on the LGBT calendar, being created and promoted by “Ask for Clive”, the LGBT pub and bar venue safety initiative. Its aim is to celebrate the start of Pride month at your local. 2023 saw over 300 venues across the UK registered to take part, with three in Dorset. The Waterloo Pub in Weymouth successfully hosted Pub Pride last year (2022). Weymouth Gay Group (WGG) contacted the three Dorset Pub Pride venues in advance of the day (26th May 2023) and we offered our support in helping to promote any events they were putting on. We were please to hear that The Globe in Swanage had a successful drag night, but we are still unsure if anything was put on at Hardys Pub in Dorchester? The third pub registered on the Pub Pride website was The Wyke Smugglers in Weymouth. This venue has recently had a change of management, and while nothing special happened this year, they are keen to do something next year. They also kindly invited our group to use their venue during the year.
Last year saw the first ever Dorset Youth Pride at Shire Hall Dorchester. It was a very successful and welcomed Pride event and was repeated recently for 2023. Set in the unique old court rooms this Youth Pride offered a range of activities, LGBT stalls and talks during the afternoon of June 10th all inside one venue. Weymouth Gay Group were one of many stalls there. We love this event, not just because we can have a stall, but with our laptop on our table we can show visitors our wonderful website! This helps to answer many of the enquiries we get, not just about our group, but LGBT events, news, and support in Dorset. Our website has been called “….. the LGBT Bible locally”, by Dorset NHS, so great to share it at Pride!
New for LGBT+ young people this year has been Chesil Youth Pride. Organised by staff from Dorset Council and Space Youth Project, with Weymouth College being a great hosting site. This took place on 17th June, a week after the Youth Pride in Dorchester. Like Dorset Youth Pride, this new Pride event was very much focused on providing a fun and supportive day out for young people. Several organisations offering support for today’s LGBT+ youth had stalls there.
The highlight of the day was the FIRST EVER Pride parade along the Prom! - Weymouth’s esplanade. This has been a dream of the local LGBT community for many years, so a HUGE thanks to all at Chesil Youth Pride for making this happen!
Unfortunately, as Weymouth Gay Group (WGG) is a very informal group (our guys like it that way) we could not have an info stall at Chesil Youth Pride as we don’t have public liability insurance – an issue that has cropped up at other events we would like to be embraced by and welcomed at within the local Dorset LGBT community. It would have been brill if two or more of our WGG guys carried our bannor in the Pride Parade. Perhaps next year?
For those of us young at heart and perhaps not otherwise very youthful, it is a real joy to see the progress that young people today can enjoy. This has been summed up beautifully by Debbs from the Weymouth “This is Me” Transgender group who recently said this on social media about Dorset Youth Pride at Shire Hall: -

There were some who were just taking their first steps into being who they are and being given encouragement by others who have been where they are and able to share how they coped and answer any questions they may have. I wish when I was their age, I'd had the access to information and help they are now slowly but more readily able to get” Debbs from the Weymouth “This is Me” Transgender group.
Growing up at a time when it was illegal to be who you are, and also living though schooling with section 28, has left its scars on a whole generation. Something that some of our Weymouth Gay Group guys are still struggling with many years later. Just wish we had Youth Pride back in our day!
Dorset’s last Pride for 2023 – The BIG ONE! BOURNE FREE – Bournemouth Pride. Wow! What a Gay Day! Seven of us ventured out by train from Weymouth & Dorchester for Dorset's biggest LGBT+ annual Pride event - BourneFree.
The event did not disappoint, although we did have a drop of rain.
A first for this year was our advert on the huge main video screen (see pic below) - oh, and our beer mats went down a treat at the bars!

Chris Ashton, chairman of Bourne Free, said: “Bourne Free is Bournemouth’s pride festival, which is a celebration of equality, diversity and inclusion in Dorset. Dorset is quite an inclusive county and we are lucky to live here, however hate crime went up by 33 per cent this year – that's why it is still important to have pride."
Comment from Weymouth Gay Group - We did not see a Dorset Police stand anywhere (or Dorset Police commissioner) like past years. Would have liked to have asked them what they are doing about the rise in LGBT+ Hate crime? - and will they be bringing back LAGLO Officers - like the Met Police will be?

However, we are still hearing comments from people who enjoyed all the community stalls and entertainment in the Lower Gardens during previous years (which was free) and reached out to the wider community, rather, as some say, how we are now hidden away in a out of the way park. Bournemouth Pride is still an expensive day out from Weymouth for those on a low income. £20 train, £20 entry into Meyrick Park, drinks £5.
Huge thanks to all the BourneFree team and volunteers who helped the day run so well. Plus enormous thanks for the on screen advert and accepting our beer mats at your bars!

This ran for the first time last year (2022) and was a beautiful inclusive day. While it is aimed at younger people, organisers say all LGBT+ people, families and allies are welcome. It includes free entry to The Shire Hall Museum.
Weymouth Gay Group was one of many local groups with a stall there.

Chesil Youth Pride
Weymouth had its first official Pride march along it’s esplanade!
Which was part of the Chesil Youth Pride which took place at Weymouth College.
They said: -The first ever Chesil Youth Pride is being held on Saturday 17th June 2023, hosted by Dorset Council, Weymouth College, Space Youth Project, The Drop-In (Portland) and Dorset Police. Chesil Youth Pride 2023 is a celebration of our LGBTQ+ young people and we are welcoming all in the local community to come and join us!
The College hosted a variety of LGBT stalls and entertainment The Parade ran from the College and went via Lodmoor and right along the sea front to The Pavilion.
It has always been a dream of the local LGBT Community to have a Pride Parade along the sea front, so it’s brilliant that it is at last happend!
